Following independence in 1975, but particularly after a military coup d’etat in 1980, the eyes of the world have turned more frequently on Suriname. This attention, however, has contributed little to a better understanding of the countrys complex and fascinating developments.
Combining a broad thematic approach with a focus on long-term developments in that country, Twentieth Century Suriname consists of thirteen chapters that discuss the main trends with respect of major areas of research. This book provides an accessible introduction to Suriname for a general audience, as well as an authoritative ’state of the art’ review of Suriname specialists.
